1. The Test: Central Wisconsin, November 2025

2. Fox Vision, Wind, and the .17 HMR
You cannot outsmart a predator you do not understand. Foxes are crepuscular. Their retinas are rod-dominant, giving them exceptional low-light sensitivity, and they possess a tapetum lucidum that reflects light back through the photoreceptors. This is what produces eyeshine — and in foxes, that eyeshine is typically a distinct yellow-green.
Canids, including foxes, are dichromatic. According to peer-reviewed retinal research by Malkemper & Peichl (2018), published in the Journal of Comparative Neurology, red foxes possess a majority of middle-to-longwave-sensitive (M/L) cones and a minority of shortwave-sensitive (S) cones. They lack the long-wave-sensitive cones that humans use to perceive red. The practical implication for night hunting: a low-intensity red beam is less likely to trigger a flight response — but the main reason is that it is dimmer, not just that it is red.
Red for scanning and approach. Lower intensity is the mechanism — red filters cut brightness dramatically, which is why they work. White only for the shot. The sudden high-intensity burst causes sensory overload that can freeze the animal for 2–3 seconds. Green carries further and makes eyeshine pop brighter to the human eye, but is more likely to alarm a cautious fox.
Caliber: Why .17 HMR, Not .223
This is where a lot of predator hunters go wrong. The .223 Rem is an outstanding coyote round. But on a fox, a 55-grain .223 bullet destroys the pelt. If you are hunting foxes for fur, the .17 HMR with a 17-grain V-Max is the right tool. Per Hornady's published ballistics, the 17gr V-MAX leaves the muzzle at 2,550 fps and is flat-shooting out to about 150 yards. My Ruger 77/17 is zeroed at 100 yards. Inside the 3-second window a committed fox gives you, that combination is lethal.
3. Why Solo Hunting Demands 3 Lights
Most hunters try to do everything with one light. They carry a handheld and try to shoot one-handed, or they mount a light on the gun and can't scan without muzzling the whole field. Both approaches fail on foxes for the same reason: foxes give you roughly three seconds from the moment they commit to the call to the moment they bolt. In those three seconds, solo, you need to: (1) keep the fox pinned under dim light, (2) shoulder your rifle, (3) positively identify the target, and (4) break a clean shot. You cannot do that with one hand holding a flashlight.
This is why I run a tiered system. Each light has one job.
4. The T28 Artemis: Finding Eyes Without Spooking
The scanner is the most important light in the system. It needs to throw a red beam far enough to pick up eyeshine at 100+ yards, but it also needs to dim down to almost nothing the instant a fox locks up. The Brinyte T28 Artemis is the light I trust for this.

How I used it on the hunt
Applying light pressure with the stepless dimmer
9:15 p.m. My FoxPro had been running a distressed cottontail for about four minutes. I had the T28 on red spot, dimmed to maybe 30%, sweeping the downwind edge of the frozen cornfield. At roughly 90 yards, a pair of yellow-green dots blinked into the beam — a red fox, locked up, staring at the caller. It had heard something it didn't like.
This is the moment most hunters lose the fox. They either hold the beam steady (which spooks it) or kill the light entirely (which loses the eyes). The T28's side-mounted stepless dimmer let me back the red down from 30% to what felt like 5% — just enough to keep the eyeshine floating in the bottom of the beam without flooding the field. The silent infiltration & gear management

Trying to align a handheld light with your scope while your cheek welds to the stock is how you gut-shoot a fox and lose it in the brush. How I used it on the hunt
The freeze: pressure switch on the foregrip
I mounted the T40 to the Ruger's Picatinny rail and ran the pressure switch tape along the foregrip at the 9 o'clock position. The fox was at 45 yards, closing on the caller, still pinned under the T28's dim red. I shouldered the rifle, found the fox in the scope, and hit the pressure pad.
The T40's 1,650-lumen white burst hit the fox like a flashbulb. Sensory overload. The animal froze mid-stride. That is the freeze window. I had maybe two seconds. The crosshair settled just behind the shoulder, I broke the shot, and the .17 HMR did its work. The fox dropped in place. Clean kill, pelt intact.
7. Executing the 3-Light Sequence
Gear is half the battle. Sequence is the other half. Here is the exact flow I ran solo that produced a clean kill.
- Phase 1 — Infiltration (HC01, low red). Walk in silently, set the e-caller 60 yards downwind of the stand, set the decoy, settle in. Kill the HC01. Wait 15 minutes. Your eyes begin dark-adapting.
- Phase 2 — Scan (T28, red spot, dimmed). Pick up the T28. Set to red spot, backed down to 20–30%. Sweep the downwind edge. Look for yellow-green eyeshine. When you find it, sweep past and let your peripheral catch it.
- Phase 3 — Lock & Freeze (T28 dimmed → T40 burst). Fox commits. Drop the T28 to its lowest red. Shoulder the rifle. Find the fox in the scope. Hit the T40 pressure switch — the white burst freezes the animal.
- Phase 4 — Shot & Recovery (HC01, white). Break the shot. Switch the HC01 to white at moderate output. Track the blood trail. Use the T28 on wide flood to illuminate the recovery area.
8. The Honest Tradeoffs
No light is perfect, and no system is universal. Here is what I will not pretend about this kit.
T28: IP66, not IP68
The T28 is dust-tight and handles heavy rain and water jets. It is not a dive light. On a frozen Wisconsin field, this is a non-issue. If you are hunting from a boat or wading swamps, secure it to your belt with the lanyard.
T40: Single fixed colour + pressure switch is an accessory
The T40 ships with the integrated Picatinny rail mount. The remote pressure switch is a separate accessory — you need to order it with the light if you want the weapon-light setup. Budget for it. And note: the T40's colour is fixed at purchase — each unit ships with one LED wavelength (White, Red, Green, UV 395nm, IR850, or IR940). If you want white for the freeze and green for scanning in one gun light, you'll need two T40 units or the tri-color T28 on a mount instead.
HC01: Not a primary scanner
The HC01 is an auxiliary light. It does not have the candela to scan a 100-yard field. If you try to use it as your primary scanner, you will miss foxes. It is a tool for navigation and close-range work, not for finding eyes.
The T28's IP66 and the HC01's compact size mean they handle rain and cold but not extreme abuse. The T40's IPX8 is the tank of the three. For solo stand hunting, all three are more than enough. If you hunt in genuine dunking conditions, the T40 is the only one you can trust underwater.
9. The Verdict: Who Should Build This System
Build this system if:
- You hunt foxes or predators at night solo, on private land, where artificial light is legal
- You are tired of losing foxes to spooked scans and fumbled one-handed shots
- You value stepless dimming, instant mechanical color switching, and a true weapon-light setup
Skip it if:
- You hunt in a state that prohibits night hunting or artificial light for foxes. Wisconsin permits lights at the point of kill while hunting on foot for foxes during open season (§29.314(4)(b)2), but season dates, dog use, and zone rules vary. Always verify current regulations with the Wisconsin DNR before you hunt.
- You only hunt foxes incidentally while calling coyotes, and a single light is already getting it done
