11:47 on a Thursday night in late February. I'd been on the tank dam since ten. Mid-30s and dropping, wind out of the north at my back — the right wind for this feeder. The hogs had come off the north sendero the last two nights, and they always stopped at the cattle guard, 280 yards out, and stood there a couple of minutes before committing. My toes quit around eleven. Around 11:40 I heard them working up the draw, so I rolled the green beam down to a whisper before I ever saw eyes. At 11:47 the cattle guard lit up with eyeshine — four bodies, pigs strung out behind them. What happened over the next six minutes, and over the three nights around it, is this review.

Four nights on a South Texas hog lease with two T18 bodies and four heads, and the green head never busted an animal, the twist zoom never walked under 20 rounds of recoil, and one charge covered four sits. The silent stepless remote changed how I hunt a sounder. The flaws are real too — the remote's button is hard to feel through gloves, the adhesive pad that ships with it won't hold it to a stock, swapping heads means unscrewing the LED module, and one night that design cost me a shot opportunity. The Kit

The lease sits outside Freer — sand, mesquite, and caliche senderos cut for oilfield trucks. I got in Wednesday evening just ahead of a blue norther, rain coming in sideways, so the first hour with the T18s happened in the truck cab.

The kit: two T18 bodies, one to run and one riding the seat box as backup, plus the four heads — white, green, red, and IR850. One thing I want to be clear about up front: the IR850 head never came out of the box. I don't own a digital night vision unit, so there was nothing to test it against, and I'm not going to make claims about a head I never fired. First impressions from the cab, handling everything with cold fingers: the anodizing and machining match my T28, no rattles, no cheap points. The twist zoom is stiff — it takes a deliberate thumb to move it, and I'll explain later why that turned out to be one of the best things about this light. The remote puck paired in about ten seconds: hold the button, the light blinks twice, done.

Then I found the first design flaw before I ever left the cab. The puck ships with an adhesive pad on the back, and it's the kind of double-sided tape that works on a dashboard and gives up on a rifle stock. I pressed it on clean, let it cure for twenty minutes, and it peeled off with the first sling swing. Out here a remote that slides off the stock mid-sit isn't an inconvenience, it's a lost night. I mounted it properly with a strip of gaffer tape and a loop of velcro, and it hasn't moved since — but a $55 light that needs a hardware-store fix on day one is worth saying out loud.

One more thing about positioning, because the product page undersells it: the T18 is a hunting flashlight, not a rifle accessory. Night one I ran it in hand, scanning senderos from the truck window, and it's balanced for that. On nights two through four it lived on the rifle. Same light, both jobs.

Night One: Scouting Drive

Wednesday night was a scouting drive, nothing more. When I hunt new ground with a new light, I do the same thing every time: find the distance where the beam stops being honest. Every light has a range past which eyeshine turns into a guess, and I'd rather learn that number on empty senderos than on a sounder I'm about to shoot.

The far gate on this lease sits about 600 yards down a straight sendero. The white head still read it clean — not a shimmer I had to squint at. The spec sheet says 1,140 meters and 325,000 candela on the 5° spot; I can't verify those numbers in a lab, but I can tell you the gate at 600 was a confident ID and everything I could ethically shoot on this property sat well inside the beam. One quirk worth noting: at mid-zoom there's a faint ring in the beam on flat surfaces. I couldn't see it on brush or terrain, only on the caliche road up close.

Rain quit around midnight. I mounted the green head for the next night and went home.

Night Two: The 280-Yard Sit

Thursday I was on the dam by ten, set up at the low spot with the wind at my back. Green head on the rifle, remote puck at 2%, thermos on the dam rock. That's the sit this review opened with.

Here's the part that matters. When the lead sow started her approach, I rolled the brightness down with my thumb — no click, no flash, no stepping through modes. If you've hunted with a click-switch light, you know the problem: at the exact moment you want the beam dimmer, stepping modes flashes the whole field, and on a sounder that flash can end the night. I've had it happen. With the T18 I just rolled it down over about a second and the beam was a whisper, still enough to hold her silhouette. When she drifted behind the feeder, I rolled it back up and found her again in half a second. That one capability — silent, stepless dimming at the moment that decides the hunt — is worth the price of the light on its own.

She stepped broadside at sixty and I took her off the sticks. Under the green head afterward, blood on the caliche read dark and easy to follow, and recovery was done inside a hundred yards. Same head that found the sounder closed out the recovery. Walking back to the truck at 1 a.m., I'd stopped thinking of this as a $55 light.

Night Three: Coyotes and a Problem

Friday I swapped to the red head for calling. Spot was a fence-line corner where a drain crosses under a sendero — brush pile on the left, open field out to 150. Setup at 9:30, cold enough that the call clicks stiff. Red dialed to 2%, rabbit distress at low volume.

Ninety seconds into the second series, eyes opened in the beam at 120 and started working in. She came down the tree line, cut the angle at 60, and ended up broadside at 90 with her ears pinned on the call. At no point — first contact, mid-approach, or standing there — did she react to the beam. That's what the 2% setting is for: enough to read her, not enough to tell her anything's on.

But the remote gave me a different problem that night, and it's worth describing precisely. Mid-30s, thin gloves, and I went to roll the brightness up a step as she closed — and couldn't feel whether I'd pressed the button. The click feedback through gloves is faint to nothing. I ended up watching the beam instead of the fox to confirm the brightness actually changed, which is exactly the wrong way around at the business end of a calling stand. On bare hands in the truck, the button is fine. Through gloves in the cold, you're flying on visuals. That's a real gap for anyone running winter predator sets, and it's the flaw I'd fix first.

Then the night turned into the exact scenario this light isn't built for. Halfway through the stand, eyeshine rippled at the far feeder — a sounder, ten head or so, working in from the north. So now I've got a coyote working in at 90 on red, and hogs feeding at 200 that I can't properly read or shoot, because red won't ID a hog at that distance and I'm not about to break a working stand to swap colors.

And here's the part worth understanding before you buy: swapping colors on the T18 isn't a twist of the head like the T28. You unscrew the flashlight head, unscrew the LED module sitting inside it, screw in the green or white module, and reassemble the whole thing. At the kitchen table that's a two-minute job and a clean system. On a stand, in the dark, with a coyote at 90 yards, it's not happening — you'd need a flat surface, both hands, and about a minute of the animal's patience, and you don't get any of those. The coyote drifted off around 11 without offering a shot, and by then the sounder had gone back into the brush. I wrote it down in the truck afterward: one module, one color, one job at a time — and the module swap is a shop job, not a field job. If your nights regularly mix species in the same sit, that's the T28 Artemis with its rotating color ring, and it costs what it costs. For a dedicated gun, the single-module trade is why the runtimes and throw numbers beat the multi-emitter lights — you're picking focus over flexibility.

Night Four: The Backup Body

Saturday afternoon I set up on the bench with the white head and a paint pen. More on that below. That night my buddy Mason came out with his Wicked A51iC, and the backup T18 earned its place in the seat box — for a dumb reason.

Friday's stand had run body number one down to its last battery bar, and I'd forgotten to charge it. So Saturday night I pulled the second T18 out, threaded the green head onto it, held the pairing button, watched the double blink — ten seconds, maybe fifteen, and the same remote puck was running a different body. On the drive between senderos I topped off body number one from the truck's USB-C port. That's the practical case for this platform: one battery type across your lights, heads that swap between bodies, and a remote that doesn't care which body it's running. My pack carries one spare 21700 for two lights.

Running the same sendero side by side with Mason was useful. His A51iC is a good light and he's happy with it — this isn't a knock. But when he stepped his brightness modes in the dark, the beam visibly flashed through each step, and he saw it too. Then we held both beams on the same fence line, and when he asked what the T18 cost, he laughed. The math is at the bottom of this review.

Forgot the charge on night four. USB-C in the cab, and a backup body that paired in ten seconds.

The Bench Test

Zoom lights have one question to answer: does the beam stay where you set it when the gun goes off? Push-pull zooms walk under recoil — I've watched one drift a third of the way to flood inside a single magazine, at exactly the moment the shooter needed a spot. The T18 uses a twist, so I tested it instead of trusting it.

Saturday afternoon, bench, white head mounted, zoom set to a position marked with a paint pen. 14 rounds of .223. Checked the ring against the mark: hadn't moved. Moved the setup to the .308, 6 rounds: still on the mark. That stiffness I read as "cheap" in the truck cab on day one is the same resistance that holds the ring through a string of shots. For a hunting flashlight that lives on a rifle one night and in your hand the next, that's the whole ballgame.

Runtime Log

Numbers from my notebook, not from the spec sheet:

  • Green head, four sits on one charge — 20–30% working brightness through the remote for the waits, rolled up for scans and ID work. Ended night four around 40% on the indicator.
  • Red head — a full calling stand plus walk-out and truck checks, still fat on the indicator. Rated 6h 12m; I never got close to finding the bottom of it.
  • White head — short scouting bursts and ID work, never ran it to empty. Rated 3h 10m at full output; at working brightness it goes much longer.
  • USB-C charging — a body went from low to full on a 40-minute drive. Field charging works as advertised.

What Annoyed Me

Every review without this section is selling you something. Each item below happened on a specific night:

  • The remote's button has almost no tactile feedback through gloves. Friday night, mid-30s, thin gloves, calling stand — I pressed and couldn't tell if I'd pressed. Had to watch the beam to confirm the brightness moved. Fine on bare hands, a real gap on winter stands.
  • The adhesive pad on the back of the remote doesn't hold. It peeled off the stock with the first sling swing on day one. I fixed it with gaffer tape and velcro and it's been solid since — but you shouldn't need a hardware-store fix to keep the remote on the gun.
  • Swapping colors means disassembly, and it's a shop job. Unscrew the head, unscrew the LED module, screw in the next one, reassemble. Clean at home, impossible on a stand with an animal working in. Friday night was the proof: coyote on red at 90, sounder needing green at 200, no way to serve both. If that's your hunting, buy the T28 Artemis instead.
  • The remote's battery door tab is a cold-hands problem. Friday, 11 p.m., gloves on, checking the puck before the second stand — the tab wouldn't cooperate, and I ended up in the cab under the dome light hunting a coin in the console. Never died on me mid-hunt; this is a maintenance gripe, not a reliability one.
  • The USB-C port cover is stiff. First three charges I was sure I'd tear it. It loosened slightly with use but never got easy.
  • IP66 means no dunking. Wednesday's storm didn't touch it — rain, sleet, wet brush are all fine. But I caught myself picking it up off the tailgate near the stock tank without thinking about it. It's spray-proof, not waterproof, and I adjust my habits around that.

Mason's A51iC ran about $180 last I checked. Side by side on the same fence line, here's the honest read: his money bought brand, distribution, and a deep accessory ecosystem. Mine bought more throw on paper — roughly an order of magnitude more peak intensity — a bigger battery, a wireless remote where his is wired, and a 5-year warranty where his carries one. What his has that the T18 doesn't: a third-party track record and day-one accessories. Whether that's worth triple is his call. I know which light I'd buy again — and after this trip, it's the one already on my rifle.

FAQ

Which T18 head should I buy for hog hunting?

Green. It carried every hog scan on my four-night test without busting a single animal, at 100–200+ yards, and it doubles as a blood-tracking light after the shot. Red works inside 50 yards but loses the scanning advantage past that.

Which T18 head for coyotes?

Red. On my calling stands the coyote never reacted to the beam at any stage — first contact at 120 yards, 60, or broadside at 90, all at 2% brightness on the remote. The 6h 12m runtime covers a full night of stands.

Does the T18 work with night vision?
